Alexander Samson is a Lecturer in Golden Age Literature at UCL. He teaches early modern Spanish and Latin American literature and culture, offering courses on the Golden Age comedia, the early colonial history of Latin America, the works of Cervantes and culture of the Spanish Renaissance. He has published articles on racial purity in 16th century Spain, international marriage treaties, and the restaging of civic triumphs in the theatre, as well as editing a book on the Prince of Wales' journey and stay in Madrid in 1623. His research interests include the reign and marriage of Philip II and Mary Tudor, translation and the rise of vernacular languages, festival books and court culture, the history and politics of the Habsburg Empire under Charles V and Philip II, the early colonial period, and the comedia.
