The database was designed and created by Dr Alexander Samson, using Microsoft Access 97. Some of the anomalous features of the database are a result of the limitations this version of Access imposes on the use of different fonts, particularly foreign language characters sets, and formatting such as italics, in one and the same field. The networking of the raw resource was done by the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at King's College London, who exported the data to MySQL.
